Why You Should Think About Detoxing From Your Deodorant

Guys have you ever had this experience? You hear about the aluminum in popular deodorant brands and you think, well that’s probably not healthy, I should try a natural deodorant. So you buy a natural deodorant and you put it on and feel good about making a healthy choice. And like 2-3 hours later, you have BO and you think, this crap doesn’t work! So you go back to the deodorant with aluminum.

I understand, I’ve totally been there. I went back to using the deodorant with aluminum and was feeling really guilty about it. But, are you ready for a surprise? It’s not that the natural deodorant isn’t working… it’s that when you don’t use conventional deodorant for a time, your body starts detoxing from the aluminum and the other ingredients, and that’s the smell! It’s from detoxing, it’s not that the natural deodorant isn’t working.

Detoxing Pathways In Your Body

Here’s how detoxing works in your body: there are only 4 ways your body can get rid of toxins: through your skin, your sweat, or the 2 ways of going to the bathroom. That’s it. All toxins exit your body through those channels.

In western medicine, one of the ideas is to prevent the body from having reactions/feelings/situations that we find to be gross or uncomfortable. We’d rather skip those scenarios. So when someone has diarrhea for example, they may take immodium to stop that symptom. But when your body has diarrhea, it’s trying to get rid of toxins. And now instead of getting rid of them, you’re keeping them in your body! Think about that for a second, storing the toxins in your body… yikes!

But that’s what so many of the products that we use every day are doing! For example, deodorant with aluminum and other chemicals. What it’s doing is preventing you from sweating, or decreasing the amount of sweat, and it pushes that stuff back in your body. Also to prevent you from having any kind of smell throughout the entire day, like 12 hours at a time, it’s pushing the toxins and bad bacteria back into your body that would normally exit through your underarm sweat.

Have you heard the saying, “Better out than in?” That directly applies to this situation, better to let your body excrete toxins instead of storing them up over years and years.

What's In the Products You Use Every Day?

Have you ever read the list of ingredients on your bathroom/hygiene products? Like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soaps, make up, cleaning products, shaving cream, laundry detergent, tampons, pads, condoms? I bet there are a few words in there you don’t recognize. I investigated this a couple years ago because I was having some health issues and read a book that said some people are extra sensitive to chemicals, and I found out I was one of them. I cleaned out my bathroom/hygiene products and started using organic products with only ingredients I recognized. Something exciting about that is, you need way fewer kinds of products. I use natural bar soap for most things: washing my hands, washing my face, I use it when I shave, and use it in the shower instead of body wash. So all of those kinds of products, down to one. I found shampoo and conditioner with no parabens or sulfates or silicone. I can tell my body feels better using these products.

But Back to Detoxing From Your Deodorant

Ok, so now that you know when you use natural deodorant, it’s not that it isn’t working, it’s that your body is detoxing from your old deodorant, what can you do to speed up the detoxing process? Because while detoxing is an essential thing to do in life, we all know it’s not very enjoyable. Right?

I researched this myself, and came upon a way to speed up the process. The good news is you only need 2 products!

  1. Raw, organic, apple cider vinegar

  2. Organic Bentonite Clay (also may be called Indian Healing Clay)

It’s hard to find Bentonite Clay at a store, I looked. So I ordered it off Amazon. I chose the brand Molivera Organics (100% Pure Bentonite Clay).

To do the detox for your underarms, you simply combine these two ingredients in a bowl and mix them together, so you get a wet clay. The only thing it, Don’t use a metal spoon to mix, that changes the chemical reaction. I usually just mix it with my finger so I don’t have to think about it.

You simply put the clay on your underarms, wait 20 minutes¸ and wash it off. That’s it.

The number of times you will have to do it depends on how much detoxing you have to do. If you want to be efficient about it, you could do it a few times each week until you don’t notice a smell anymore. I have a hard time being consistent, so I’ve been doing it like once every two to three weeks since September.

I have always been a person that sweats a lot, and I was really embarrassed about that as a teenager, so since about the age of 13 I was using “clinical strength deodorant.” Which I’m guessing has extra chemicals in it. Which means I have some massive detoxing to do. Especially with my inconsistent nature, it could take a while.

The super cool thing is after you do a detox session, your underarms don’t smell AT ALL. There’s just no smell, good or bad, it feels very natural. When you start to notice a smell again, a few days or a week later, you know it’s time to do another detox session.

At the point where you get all the toxins out, you’ll be able to use natural deodorant and it’ll work great because your body won’t be trying to spit out toxins.

Also while you’re detoxing, obviously you need to be using natural deodorant. Otherwise as you detox you’ll just be adding all those toxins in again.

How To Do A Face Mask To Make Your Pores Smaller And Your Skin Tighter

Fun fact, the same mixture of bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar can be used to do a face mask. You just mix them together, spread it on your face, and wait 20 minutes¸ then wash it off. I’ll be honest, I’ve only done this one like once a month, because it’s more annoying that the underarm one.

The smell of the apple cider vinegar is so strong on my face, it makes my eyes water while I’m waiting the 20 minutes. Something unique about doing it on your face, is you can feel your skin get tighter as the mask dries.

Actually, funny story, I was just doing a face mask, and detoxing my underarms last night. My mom happened to call just after I had applied the mask and was waiting the 20 minutes. I had to put her on speakerphone because I had clay on my face. My eyes were watering and the longer we talked the odder it felt. The mask on my face kept getting tighter and tighter, and it was harder for me to move my mouth to respond without feeling weird. I told her I had the mask on and she had a good laugh before she hung up to let me wash it off. Haha.

Perks of the Face Mask!

Ok guys, like I mentioned, after doing the face mask your pores will be much smaller, what I have noticed is they seem much shallower, like something just on the surface. And your skin will be tighter. Also your face will feel SOOO soft, super soft!! The softest I’ve ever noticed was after doing this mask.

My mom can notice a visual difference after I do a face mask, pretty cool!

First Step to Try

Alright, so if you’ve read this and think you should start looking into the chemicals in your products, don’t do it all at once, you’ll get overwhelmed!

I suggest starting with one thing, maybe tackle the deodorant first and try to detox, see how that goes! Then, once you've got that figured out, you can look into another product, etc.

Comment and let me know if you’ve gotten rid of any toxins in your home, and what your favorite products are!
